The Last Five Years

Director’s Note: The Last Five Years is an intimate and honest musical about a relationship between two young artists in NYC. In our production, two femme actors take on their story. The story follows the couple as they meet, fall in love, search for fulfillment in their careers and marriage, and are met with the consequences of their choices. This queered love story is brought to you by a production team who wanted to explore queer love beyond a coming-out story.

This musical plays with time, jumping back and forth throughout the five years of Jamie and Cathy’s relationship. Cathy’s perspective rewinds from their fifth year together to their meeting. Jamie’s perspective starts at year 1 and follows chronologically. There are 5 entrances around the room that each correlate to that year in their relationship. The actors enter from the year in which the song takes place. Notice how Jamie and Cathy are always moving in different directions missing each other by just a second.
